Have social media had their day?

I've just published the first edition of my re-launched newsletter (www.mwls.com/newsletters/2015-01.php). It's been a long time since I published a newsletter - partly because I didn't have a good method for distribution, opting-in and opting-out but the main reason was that social media seemed so fashionable. So what's changed?

In some ways Twitter and Facebook have become too successful and what you are interested in is being swamped by advertisements and over-enthusiastic tweeters and posters.

But it gets worse: Facebook decides what you see and it's impossible just to only see a person's timeline - you have to view what they have re-posted and their friends' photographs that they have appeared in.

I will continue to use Twitter and Facebook because they do have the advantage of providing instant notifications of new items without swamping my newsletter subscribers with emails.

Empowerment

Stopped off at a motorway service station for a takeaway coffee and went into a nearly-empty Starbucks.

When I asked for a coffee, I was asked for my name. When I asked, 'Why', I was told that they did this to make sure that customers received the right order when they are busy - but they still have to do this even when they're not busy!

I said 'Forget it' because I didn't want to buy from a company that couldn't trust their staff to make intelligent decisions.

Using MS Office across devices

One of the frustrations of having so many different computers, laptops and other devices is having a single document format that you can use across these devices.

The obvious answer would be to use Microsoft Office but the mobile versions of these programs couldn't be used unless you subscribed to Office 365 at a hefty 5.99 a month. It's possible to create, open, edit and save Microsoft Office files using Open Office, but I found that it made too many changes to make it viable. Other applications like Docs To Go claim to be compatible with Microsoft Office but again I found that most of these seemed to be based on Open Office with the same limitations.

However, everything has changed with Microsoft's recent announcement that it has made a partnership with Dropbox and that its mobile apps are free to use for creating and editing Microsoft Office files. You won't get synchronisation unless you subscribe to Office 365, but downloading from, and uploading to Dropbox is not great hardship.
