Oxford University Press's Word of the Year - 2024



The Oxford University Press's word/phrase of the year for 2024 is 'Brain Rot' (a result of overconsumption of material).

The first recorded use of 'brain rot' was in Henry David Thoreau's 1854 book Walden, or Life in the Woods*, but it has a new significance as an expression in this digital age.
